Traffic incident management training

The Saco Fire Department has participated in a steering committee with the Maine State Police, Maine Turnpike Authority, and Southern Maine Regional Planning, along with York County Emergency Management Agency and several local law and fire/EMS agencies to create a safer working environment when responding to and working at incidents on the Maine Turnpike.

The major objectives of the steering committee included:

  • Increase responder safety by eliminating struck-by incidents, injuries, and fatalities
  • Minimize impacts to the free flow of traffic
  • Decrease incident clearance time
  • Decrease secondary incident occurrences
  • Improve inter-agency communication during incidents
From the committee's work came two major components:

1. A training presentation delivered to all fire and EMS responders along the Maine Turnpike corridor addressing the objectives stated above, and

2. A short video presentation to accompany the training presentation demonstrating the correct procedures to be used when working on the Maine Turnpike.
