  • FAQ of the month: How do I install and maintain my wood burning stove?

Answer: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) #211 recommends that free standing wood burning stoves (not including furnace) need to have a minimum of 36-inches of clearance to combustible materials on all sides.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), more than 140,000 wood burning-related fire, 280 deaths and 2,500 injuries occur each year. Some of the major causes of wood burning related fire are:
    • Inadequate clearances from the heater to combustibles, such as wall, ceiling, floor and furniture.
    • Excessive creosote buildup in the chimney. Creosote is a black substance that resembles a tar-like liquid or small black flakes. Creosote burns easily.
    • An improperly installed or maintained chimney.
    • Improper maintenance of the wood burner.
A rule of thumb is to clean a chimney whenever there is more than a 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch of creosote buildup and at the very least you need to clean the chimney on an annual basis.

A brochure and code information can be obtained at the Fire Departments Administration building.
