Work Zone Safety
As you travel through Saco this summer you will inevitably travel through a work zone. It might be the Public Works Department, State Department of Transportation, or a private contractor doing work in or around the road. The work zones can cause delays and test the patience of drivers.

There are many things to be aware of as you travel through a work zone. The pavement may be uneven, broken, or even missing and replaced with gravel. If a road is being paved, the manholes and catch basins may be raised to meet the new grade of the road. Finally, men and equipment will be moving in and out of the work zone. Here are a few tips to be safe as you travel through a work zone:
  • First and foremost is pay attention. Driver inattention is the leading cause of accidents. Please put your cell phone, map, cheeseburger, lipstick, or razor down and pay attention to your surroundings as you pass through the work zone.
  • Second, is slow down. Obey all work zone speed limits. Traveling at a low speed will assure that you are in control of your vehicle. Fines for speeding in a work zone are doubled.
If you can avoid a work zone by seeking an alternate route please do so. If not, have some patience and pay attention so that everyone can arrive home safely to his or her loved ones at the end of the day.
