Alfred Shaker exhibit now at Saco Museum
Simple Gifts - The Alfred Shakers 1783 - 1931 , at the Saco Museum, provides a rare opportunity to see items from the Alfred Shakers including some that have never been displayed outside the Sabbathday Lake Community. The Sabbathday Lake Community is the only active Shaker community in the world and is home to the largest number of Alfred Shaker material anywhere.

Simple Gifts: The Alfred Shakers will trace the chronological history of the community and highlight important Shaker leaders. The exhibit brings together some of the most celebrated pieces from the Alfred community using over 100 historic images, drawings, furniture, decorative and functional home accessories, and fancy goods to explore all aspects of Shaker community life. Sister Frances Carr, of Sabbathday Lake, said "I am pleased that the Alfred story is being told in the gracious setting of the Saco Museum. Sister Mildred Barker, who came from the Alfred Community to Sabbathday Lake, would have been extremely pleased with this exhibition."

The Saco Museum and the Sabbathday Lake Community & Museum are working together to produce this exhibit, which is the only exhibit ever created to focus exclusively on the Alfred Shaker community. The exhibition will be augmented with various programs, including a Thursday night lecture series that begins August 25 on topics such as Alfred Shaker history, artists, poplarware, regional trade routes and cooking. A Shaker music performance by the Enfield Shaker Singers at the Temple in Ocean Park is planned for August 27. The Saco Museum gift shop will carry numerous Shaker gift items, including herbs and teas. A Shaker herb garden, developed by the Saco Bay Gardening Club, is flourishing on the museum grounds. The exhibit will be on view at 371 Main Street through October 30.

The museum will maintain the following open hours for the Simple Gifts exhibition: Noon - 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Noon - 8 p.m on Thursday. Museum admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors, $2 for students and children, and children under 6 are free. The Museum is open free of charge on Thursday evenings from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Special rates available for group tours.
