Main Street & Pepperell Square Rehabilitation Project, November 2005

Work on this project has been on going since last April. As the construction season winds down the crews continue to work to on various parts of the job.

At this point all of the new streetlights are in place and working, all overhead wiring has been removed from Main Street, and new signs are in place. Most of the sidewalk work is complete.

One big part of the job involved the removal of the old trolley poles that have been in place since the late 1800's. These came down on Monday November 7th. The poles have been donated to the Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport. Many of the poles had a decorative cap installed. These were original to the poles and had historic significance as well as some financial value. The caps were collected as the poles were removed. The city will retain a number of these and the remainder will also go to the trolley museum.

In Pepperell Square new lighting has been installed and trees have been planted. There is also a piece of Saco's past located here. A horse trough, which once stood in the square, has been donated to the city. This will be permanently installed as part of the project. There are also plans for displays that will detail the history of the area.

Work will wind down over the next few weeks. Final paving on will take place next spring. All of the businesses and shops on Main Street are to be commended for their patience and support during this process. The city has received a number of positive comments on the new look of the area; it is certainly more open and visually appealing. The new lights give the area an entirely different look at night.
