Eastern Trail coming to Saco
Walkers, cyclists, joggers, outdoor enthusiasts - rejoice! The Eastern Trail is coming to Saco. Preliminary design of the 4.4 mile Saco to OOB segment has been completed, and the project is on target for construction in 2010. This portion of the ET will run from Milliken Mills Road in OOB south to the Thornton Academy campus, and include a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Route One near Goosefare Brook.
A public hearing and informational meeting is scheduled for November 19th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Transportation Center. Completion of final design work will occur over the winter, the project will go out to bid in the spring, and trail work should go forward in 2010.

Another Eastern Trail project that will also mean recreational opportunities for Saco and area residents is making great progress to our south. The 6.2 mile Biddeford, Arundel and Kennebunk project saw construction begin in late September. The most notable portions of this project - bridges over the Kennebunk River and the Maine Turnpike - will be constructed in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Most of this segment will be ready for public use later in the summer next year, and will allow users to travel, off-road, from Southern Maine Medical Center south to Rte. 35 in Kennebunk.
In addition to all this trail design and construction work are efforts that include web-based interactive mapping, a "user's manual" for ET communities, and aiding the Maine DOT in the development of new and improved signage. And, watch for a bicycle tourism/economic development conference in Spring 2011.
