BSOOB Transit Hires New Executive Director
The Biddeford-Saco-Old Orchard Beach Transit System recently welcomed a new Executive Director, Al Schutz. Al's first day on the job was September 27, and he hit the ground running, meeting with the BSOOB Transit Committee on the 29th, and attending a meeting of the Portland Area Comprehensive Transportation Committee, an important funding source for the local bus service.

Al is a native of Gloversville, N.Y., where he left a similar position with Gloversville Transit. Under Al's leadership, an operating shortfall that he inherited upon taking the position in 2004 was cut in half, and service had been expanded to a variety of demographic groups including para-transit, hospitals and primary care facilities. Al and his staff were recognized with three New York State DOT awards during his 6-year tenure.

"It's wonderful having a great team like BSOOB Transit Committee behind me and together we will realize the full potential of Shuttlebus-Zoom," said Al shortly after his arrival. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Al takes over a local bus system that saw 171,287 passenger trips in fiscal year 2009.

For over 30 years, the ShuttleBus has served Southern Maine residents with a convenient and affordable public transportation network. BSOOB Transit offers ShuttleBus Local Service within Biddeford, Saco and Old Orchard Beach, and the ShuttleBus Intercity Service that connects the Tri-Towns with Scarborough, South Portland and Portland.

In 1998, ShuttleBus joined with MaineDOT and the Maine Turnpike Authority to launch the ZOOM Turnpike Express, a commuter service that links Biddeford and Saco with downtown Portland.
